This course is designed for English major students who are in their third academic year or more.

English 431 is designed to provide students with a general but solid understanding of Shakespeare's
works by taking an analytical approach to several of the plays, focusing in turn on tragedy, history,
and comedy. The principal goals of this course are to familiarize students with the works of
Shakespeare and to help them appreciate his rich characterization, his intellectual complexity, and
his dramatic and poetic artistry. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to grasp
the place of Shakespeare's plays in the intellectual milieu of his time as well as their significance
for the twenty first century.
